The USV Following System is a critical control layer in the transition of uncrewed surface vessels from single-platform autonomous navigation toward manned-unmanned teaming, leader-follower operations, formation keeping, coordinated multi-USV missions and fleet-level autonomy. A typical system combines autonomous control software, mission-planning software, rugged edge computing, vessel-interface controllers, operator interfaces, communications and software connections to GNSS/INS, radar, AIS, EO/IR, LiDAR and other perception devices. In cooperative following, the lead vessel or target can transmit position, heading and speed directly, allowing the follower to maintain a defined relative geometry through high-frequency state updates. In non-cooperative following, the USV must independently detect, classify and track the target through radar, electro-optical or LiDAR sensing and then predict its motion. RTK-enabled cooperative configurations can achieve decimeter-class relative positioning under favorable operating conditions, while control and navigation data are commonly refreshed at frequencies of approximately 1-10 Hz or higher depending on the architecture. Line-of-sight operations typically use dedicated radio, mesh networking or cellular communications, while beyond-line-of-sight missions add satellite connectivity and onboard autonomy capable of maintaining safe operation during communications degradation. Commercial retrofit projects may require several months to more than a year from vessel characterization through integration and sea trials, while defense qualification can extend materially longer because cybersecurity, redundancy, fail-safe behavior and contested-environment performance must be validated. The market scope in this report includes Standalone Type systems sold independently of the vessel and the non-overlapping autonomous/following value embedded in complete USVs. It excludes the full hull and propulsion value, general-purpose sensors, payloads, pure remote-control equipment and basic waypoint-navigation or station-keeping functions that do not provide dynamic target following, formation or collaborative control.

The global USV Following System market is moving from technology demonstration toward broader operational deployment, with revenue reaching USD 293.32 million in 2025, rising to an estimated USD 374.20 million in 2026 and projected to reach USD 1.09 billion by 2032. The 2026-2032 revenue CAGR is 19.60%, reflecting both expansion in the number of autonomous vessels and increasing autonomy value per platform. Earlier USV programs were frequently centered on remote control, waypoint navigation and basic collision avoidance; the next generation increasingly combines mother-vessel following, target tracking, formation control, multi-USV coordination, remote operations and mission orchestration within one software environment. This raises software, computing, communications and system-assurance content even when the underlying navigation hardware becomes more standardized. Another growth mechanism is operator leverage: the commercial objective is shifting from one operator controlling one vessel toward one operator supervising several autonomous platforms. That transition materially increases the importance of fleet management, mission allocation, relative navigation and autonomous exception handling. Lower hardware costs can therefore accelerate market adoption rather than reduce total system value, because cheaper computing and communications lower the entry barrier for USV deployment while software-defined functionality, cybersecurity and validation account for a larger share of system economics. Between 2026 and 2032, the principal incremental demand is expected to come from naval multi-USV operations, offshore energy inspection, collaborative hydrographic survey and vessel-agnostic retrofit autonomy for existing commercial and government craft.

Competition remains moderately fragmented, with the top five suppliers-L3Harris Technologies, Kongsberg, BAE Systems, Exail and Thales-representing approximately 38.92% of global revenue in 2025. L3Harris Technologies leads with about 10.73%, supported by a mature autonomous control architecture and experience integrating autonomy onto different vessel types. Kongsberg accounts for approximately 7.87%, combining K-MATE autonomy with a broader portfolio in marine navigation, robotics and subsea systems. BAE Systems represents roughly 7.11%, with a strong position in high-assurance military autonomous control for complex and contested operating environments. Exail holds approximately 6.87% and benefits from the combination of DriX USVs, CortiX autonomy, navigation and underwater positioning technologies across hydrography, offshore and defense applications. Thales represents approximately 6.35%, with a stronger emphasis on unmanned mission systems, mine countermeasures and system-of-systems management. Saab, Hanwha Systems, Naval Group, Elbit Systems, Rafael, Sea Machines Robotics, Meteksan Defence, Zhuhai Yunzhou Intelligence Technology (OceanAlpha), Liquid Robotics (Boeing) and EvoLogics form a substantial second tier with different strategic positions: some emphasize vessel-agnostic autonomy software, others integrate autonomy into proprietary naval USVs, and others focus on persistent ocean robotics or cooperative survey platforms. The 24.30% share represented by other suppliers confirms that the market is not controlled by a small oligopoly and remains open to regional defense companies, specialized marine robotics developers and emerging autonomy-software suppliers.

By system type, Embedded Type remains the larger category, generating USD 158.42 million in 2025 and representing 54.01% of the global market, while Standalone Type generated USD 134.90 million and accounted for 45.99%. Embedded systems are engineered together with a specific USV hull, propulsion architecture, mission sensors and onboard electronics, enabling tighter tuning of guidance and control, deeper integration of safety functions and predictable system-level performance. This approach is particularly important for high-speed tactical USVs, armed vessels, mine-countermeasure platforms and other missions where propulsion response, payload control and autonomy must be qualified as a complete system. The trade-off is lower portability and greater dependence on the original platform supplier for upgrades. Standalone Type systems compete through vessel independence, open interfaces, reusable software, retrofit efficiency and compatibility with third-party sensors and mission systems. A mature autonomy core can be deployed across multiple hulls after adapting vessel dynamics and actuator interfaces, creating a more scalable engineering model. Embedded Type is forecast to grow at an 18.47% CAGR from 2026 to 2032, while Standalone Type grows faster at 20.85%, progressively narrowing the revenue gap. This reflects a broader change in maritime autonomy economics: value is migrating from proprietary vessel-specific automation toward reusable autonomy stacks, remote operations, fleet-management software, software upgrades and open APIs that allow customers to avoid excessive platform lock-in.

Defense & Maritime Security is the dominant application, generating USD 166.14 million in 2025, equivalent to 56.64% of total market revenue, and is projected to grow at a 20.12% CAGR from 2026 to 2032. Demand extends far beyond routine patrol and includes intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, mine countermeasures, anti-submarine support, force protection, convoy and escort operations, critical-infrastructure protection and manned-unmanned teaming. Military systems require encrypted and resilient communications, degraded-navigation capability, redundancy, cybersecurity, sensor fusion and integration with tactical command or combat-management environments, which raises both system value and qualification barriers. Offshore Energy & Subsea Infrastructure represents 11.94% of the 2025 market and has the fastest CAGR among the major defined applications at 20.71%. Offshore wind farms, oil and gas facilities, subsea cables, pipelines and offshore substations require repeated survey, inspection and environmental monitoring, while uncrewed platforms reduce dependence on high-cost crewed vessels. As USVs increasingly deploy or cooperate with ROVs, AUVs and acoustic payloads, following functionality expands from surface relative navigation into mobile communications relay, underwater-asset tracking and coordinated surface-subsurface missions.

Hydrographic Survey & Seabed Mapping accounted for 15.78% of global revenue in 2025 and is projected to expand at an 18.20% CAGR through 2032. It remains one of the most commercially mature non-defense environments for maritime autonomy because mission performance can be measured through survey coverage, track accuracy, vessel days and data quality. A common operating model combines a crewed mothership with one or several USVs: following and relative-position functions support coordinated transit, communications management and recovery, while the autonomous craft separate to conduct parallel or geographically divided survey lines. Commercial Marine Operation & Workboat represented 6.33% of the market in 2025 and is forecast to grow at 17.79%, covering harbor support, logistics, utility craft, convoying, pilotage support and retrofit autonomy for existing vessels. These users place greater emphasis on lifecycle economics, installation time and maintainability than on defense-grade performance, making modular autonomy kits particularly relevant. Scientific & Environmental Monitoring accounted for 6.00%, with demand from oceanography, fisheries, meteorology, water quality and persistent environmental observation; endurance, payload flexibility, low energy use and open data interfaces are more important than maximum speed. Others represented 3.31% and include search and rescue, firefighting, aquaculture, emergency response and specialized civil marine operations.

Regional demand is led by North America, while Asia-Pacific is becoming the main source of incremental growth. North America generated USD 116.67 million in 2025, representing 39.78% of global revenue, with the United States providing the majority of demand through naval autonomy, maritime security, hydrographic applications and commercial retrofit programs. Its 2026-2032 CAGR of 17.13% is below the global average because the region starts from the largest installed and project base, but absolute revenue additions remain substantial. Asia-Pacific represented 26.96% in 2025 and is forecast to grow at 23.55%, the fastest rate among the five regions. China is the largest country market within the region, with an estimated global share of about 8%, supported by domestic USV manufacturing, marine survey, maritime security and expanding offshore applications; Japan contributes around 3%-4% and maintains a strong position in high-reliability ocean survey, scientific monitoring and maritime-security applications. South Korea is increasingly important in swarm USVs and naval manned-unmanned teaming, while Australia and India are expanding defense and ocean-surveillance requirements. Europe represented 24.27% of global revenue in 2025 and is forecast to grow at 18.64%, supported by France, the United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, Germany and other maritime technology centers. Middle East & Africa accounted for 5.40% but is projected to expand at 21.34%, concentrated in defense, critical-infrastructure protection and offshore-energy applications in Israel, Turkiye, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Latin America remains the smallest region at 3.59% and is forecast to grow at 16.34%, with Brazil and Mexico providing much of the demand from offshore energy, hydrography and coastal security.

The upstream supply chain is defined less by traditional raw materials than by high-reliability navigation, sensing, computing and communications hardware. Precision GNSS/INS, IMUs, marine radar, EO/IR systems, LiDAR, AIS, satellite communications terminals, rugged computers, GPU or AI accelerators, redundant power electronics, vessel-control interfaces and high-reliability connectors determine perception coverage, positioning performance, environmental robustness and fault tolerance. Defense configurations add anti-jam navigation, encrypted data links, secure computing and stricter cybersecurity requirements. General-purpose sensing hardware has become increasingly available from multiple sources, but high-end inertial navigation, secure tactical communications, specialized acoustic positioning and qualified mission computers continue to carry high entry barriers. As a result, the most attractive value pools are shifting toward autonomy algorithms, sensor fusion, mission management, cybersecurity, software assurance and vessel-interface engineering rather than the resale of commodity hardware. Supply-chain localization is becoming more important because government and defense customers increasingly require traceable components, control of software intellectual property, local support and compliance with national security and export-control requirements.

The middle of the value chain is dominated by systems engineering and verification. A supplier must characterize vessel dynamics, interface with throttle, rudder, waterjet or electric propulsion systems, synchronize navigation and perception sensors, establish collision-avoidance logic and validate behavior under changing sea states, traffic density and communications conditions. Product quality is therefore measured through more than nominal navigation accuracy; it includes target reacquisition after sensor loss, safe behavior during communications outages, predictable COLREG-aware maneuvering, robustness to GNSS degradation, operator workload and the ability to update software without destabilizing validated functions. Commercial procurement is gradually shifting toward standardized autonomy kits, recurring software licenses and lifecycle upgrades, while defense programs remain more project-oriented and require longer qualification. Downstream customers increasingly evaluate total mission cost rather than unit hardware price. If a mothership can supervise several USVs simultaneously, the economic benefit is created through lower crew requirements, fewer vessel days, reduced fuel consumption, lower exposure to hazardous environments and wider mission coverage. Once an autonomy supplier is integrated into a customer's fleet-control, communications and mission-planning environment, switching costs become meaningful because sea-trial history, interface validation, operator training and cybersecurity approval must be repeated when the system changes.

The next phase of competition will be centered on autonomy platforms and fleet architectures rather than on individual unmanned boats. Open architectures, cross-platform portability, resilient navigation in GNSS-challenged environments, AI-assisted target recognition, multi-vehicle task allocation and coordinated USV-UUV/ROV operations are becoming core product-development priorities. Defense groups are broadening their maritime autonomy portfolios, specialist USV manufacturers are moving into larger vessels and more demanding offshore missions, and standalone autonomy companies are expanding from commercial workboats and survey platforms into government and defense procurement. At the same time, higher-power USVs capable of carrying work-class ROVs, larger acoustic systems and multi-mission payloads are extending the addressable market from data acquisition into subsea inspection and intervention. Greater regulatory clarity around remote operations, connectivity, software assurance and human oversight should gradually reduce uncertainty for commercial deployment, although certification will remain an important barrier. From 2026 through 2032, the largest incremental opportunities are expected in defense fleet deployment, offshore-energy inspection, retrofit autonomy and rapidly growing Asia-Pacific and Middle Eastern programs, with competitive advantage increasingly determined by software reuse, safety assurance, interoperability and lifecycle support rather than hull design alone.
