Polyamide 12 (PA12, Nylon 12) is a polymer with the molecular formula -[(CH2)11C(O)NH]n-. It is synthesized from ω-aminododecanoic acid or laurolactam monomers, each containing 12 carbon atoms. As a semi-crystalline to crystalline thermoplastic material, it exhibits low density and minimal water absorption. PA12 is widely utilized as a polyamide additive in industrial applications.

Nylon 1 (Polyamide 11/PA11), another member of the polyamide family, is a bioplastic produced by polymerizing 11-aminoundecanoic acid4. Known for its chemical resistance, mechanical strength, and thermal stability, PA11 is particularly suited for high-performance technical applications due to its durability.

Foreign enterprises monopolize the supply of nylon 12, and domestic products are expected to break through

The mainstream production process of nylon 12 is the oxidative oxime method, which has a relatively high technical barrier. Currently, the market is monopolized by four companies: Evonik, EMS, Arkema and Ube Industries, and the competitive landscape is highly concentrated. In the 1950s, China began to make attempts at domestic production of special nylons represented by long-chain nylon. Currently, domestic enterprises have made breakthroughs in varieties such as PA610, PA612, PA1012, and PA1212, but PA12 is still almost entirely dependent on imports. In recent years, policies have increased support for the special nylon industry. Domestic enterprises will continue to rise to the challenge and are expected to break the monopoly of PA12.
