The global theatrical box office is firmly back in growth, with revenue up 7% to $34.6bn in 2025. That growth now comes mainly from earning more per visit from higher ticket prices, premium big-screen formats, immersive experiences and concession spend. Rather than waiting on a full return of admissions, exhibitors are already capturing more value from every visit, which gives revenue a steadier base.

Local-language content has become an increasingly important driver of attendance, particularly across France, Italy, Spain and the Nordics, where domestic titles are now central to quarterly outcomes. These homegrown hits give markets real resilience between Hollywood tentpoles. At the same time, cinemas are focusing more on profit through loyalty and subscription programmes, flexible pricing, and targeted premium-screen investment.

Operators are expanding what a cinema visit can be. Alternative programming, such as concert films, live sports, gaming and event releases is now gaining increase audience engagement. Taylor Swift's concert film generated $50 million globally over a single weekend and the Stranger Things finale took an estimated $25–30 million in just one day. Paired with continued investment in laser projection, immersive sound and premium seating, this is repositioning cinema as an experience-led destination. Even so, big Hollywood titles and well-known franchises remain the backbone of the calendar and still deliver the biggest audiences.

Market Trends:

Regionally, performance remains uneven. Asia Pacific remains the largest region at 39% of the global total, and grew an impressive 19% in 2025, with Japan surpassing its pre-pandemic revenue levels and India recording its highest-ever theatrical year. North America and Western Europe are building stronger momentum in 2026 to 10% and 8%, supported by premium formats, pricing growth, and a stronger release slate. Across every region, yield expansion and premium formats are lifting the long-term trajectory.

Local-language content is now a genuine growth driver, not just a stabiliser. Domestic films are setting records across Europe and Asia: China's local titles held ~80% share led by Ne Zha 2, the first non-Hollywood film ever to top the global yearly box office while Korea's The King's Warden became the first local film to top $100m. This depth of homegrown content gives markets real resilience and keeps audiences engaged year-round, between the global tentpoles.

The theatrical model is evolving beyond traditional exhibition. Operators are increasingly investing in technology, premium seating, and alternative programming such as live events and concert films to enhance the cinema experience and drive additional revenue streams. This shift is repositioning cinema as a more experience-led, event-driven proposition, distinguishing it from home entertainment and reinforcing its role within the wider content ecosystem.

Areas Explored:

Global revenue reached $34.6bn in 2025 and is expected to grow 3% to $35.6bn in 2026, then keep rising to $41.6bn by 2030 - the strongest levels since the pandemic. This growth is led by higher prices and premium formats rather than more ticket sales, though ticket numbers are still expected to grow from 5.3bn in 2025 to 5.9bn by 2030.

The year ahead looks exceptional, thanks to one of the strongest film line-ups in years - Avatar: Fire and Ash, Zootopia 2, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Toy Story 5, Super Mario Galaxy and Minions 3 - plus 12 to 14 films made specially for IMAX, including Dune: Part Three and The Odyssey. With a slate this strong, 2026 is set to be one of the best years since the pandemic in most major markets.

Premiumisation is the market's standout growth engine, and it is delivering record results. IMAX hit an all-time-high $1.28bn in 2025, up 40% year-on-year and 13% above 2019 , and is guiding to ~$1.4bn in 2026, pointing to another record year. Premium large-format screens now account for ~16% of North American admissions, up from ~14% in 2024, showing how quickly audiences are embracing higher-value experiences.
