A breathing circuit consists of one or two pieces of plastic tubing and a bag that connects a fresh gas flow (wall oxygen or ventilator) to the patient's airway, such as a face mask and laryngeal mask airway (LMA), or endotracheal tube (ETT).

A breathing circuit consists of one or two pieces of plastic tubing and a bag that connects a fresh gas flow (wall oxygen or ventilator) to the patient's airway, such as a face mask and laryngeal mask airway (LMA), or endotracheal tube (ETT). The breathing circuit serves two purposes to transport oxygen and fresh gases to the patient, such as nitrous oxide, nitric oxide, or anesthetic gases. Exhaled carbon dioxide from alveolar gases is carried away from the patient. The purpose of anesthetic breathing circuits is to deliver O2 and anesthetic gases to patients while also removing CO2. They're divided into five categories based on the presence or absence of unidirectional valves, the presence and location of a reservoir bag, the method for removing CO2, the circuit's ability to permit or prevent rebreathing, and the circuit's efficiency at preventing rebreathing. A valveless breathing system for children up to 30kg in weight is used in pediatric anesthesia. It can be used for both controlled and natural ventilation. An anesthesia machine with a continuous gas flow is required (gas driven), which is disposable. Hence, the market is expected to grow in the forecast period with increasing technological advancements.

Limitations associated with pediatric ventilators are expected to hamper the market growth

A manufacturing defect in a limb of the breathing circuit can cause difficult ventilation with a high-pitched wheezing-like sound, mimicking bronchospasm in this unusual case. In addition, the significance of the following airway obstruction due to structural defects can still occur with commonly used anesthetic breathing circuits; leakage testing of anesthesia machines failed to detect breathing circuit obstruction, so one should not entirely rely on the machine's guarantee; and a manual resuscitation bag and/or bag valve mask, as well as an oxygen cylinder, should always be available during all anesthetic practices. Hence, lack of knowledge and defect in the product can hamper the market growth.

COVID-19 Impact Analysis

Children with COVID-19 who are mechanically ventilated should be transported with a ventilator equipped with viral filters on the patient side of the y-piece and the breathing circuit's expiratory limb. If a transport ventilator is not available, a viral filter should be placed on the tracheal tube during transport, with the caveat that they increase circuit dead space, which can be significant in small children. Capnography and visual observation of bilateral chest rise should be used to confirm tracheal intubation. Capnography sample lines should be placed after viral filters. Virus filters from anesthesia circuits can sometimes be repurposed as viral filters for manual transport circuits. Hence, the increasing use of breathing circuits during covid-19 is expected to positively impact the market growth.

Semi-open breathing systems have a reservoir breathing bag, no functional exhaled gas re-breathing, and high fresh gas flows. Mapleson breathing systems are among them. During general anesthesia, the Mapleson Circuit Systems are used to deliver oxygen and anesthetic agents and remove carbon dioxide. The components are the breathing tube, adjustable pressure limiting valve, reservoir bag, fresh gas flow, and patient connection. Each circuit serves a purpose in a different situation. The Mapleson A, for instance, is the best circuit for adult spontaneous respiration; the Mapleson D is best for controlled ventilation, and the Mapleson E and F are best for neonates and paediatric patients.
