Crucibles are the vessels that are used to melt and cast metal alloys. These are designed to withstand extremely high temperatures, and are highly resistant to thermal shock. Graphite is commonly used in pencils, steel furnaces, refractory production, brake linings, and foundry facings. It can be fabricated into a wide range of products, including crucibles. These are available in many forms and shapes, ranging from the size of a teacup to holding several tons of molten metal.

The most common method of constructing graphite crucibles is by molding. The mold is filled with a pasty mixture of graphite material and then compacted using either rotary or vibration molding processes. Once molded, the crucible is fired in large kilns at temperatures specific to the type of crucible being manufactured. Once fired, the crucible is glazed to protect it from chemical and physical damage.
