Tendon repair is surgery conducted to treat a torn and damaged tendon. The damaged area may feel weak or painful. Tendons are soft, band-like tissues that connect muscles to bone. When the muscles contract, the tendons pull the bones and cause the joints to move. When tendon damage occurs, movement may be seriously limited. Tendon injury may occur in the body where tendons are present. The joints that are most commonly affected by tendon injuries are the shoulders, elbows, ankles, thighs, knees, and fingers. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, "jersey finger" is one of the most common sports injuries affecting the tendons. Tendon damage can also occur in rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammatory disease of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can involve the tendons, causing them to tear.
Tendon damaged is treated by tendon repair surgeries. Tendon repair is done to bring back normal movement to a joint. In tendon repair surgery, a surgeon will make one or more small incisions (cuts) in the skin over the damaged tendon, sew the torn ends of the tendon together, check the surrounding tissue to make sure no other injuries, such as injury to the blood vessels or nerves have occurred, and then then close the incision and cover the area with sterile bandages or dressings. If there isn't enough healthy tendon to reconnect, the surgeon may perform a tendon graft using a piece of tendon from another part of the body. It may be from the foot or toe, for example. On occasion, a tendon transfer (moving a tendon from one area to another) may be useful in restoring function. After tendon repair surgery, surgeon will suggest to immobilize or splint the joint to allow the tendon to heal.
Major factors driving growth of the tendon repair market include increase in geriatric population, rise in sports-related injuries such as sprains, strains, tendinitis, contusions, surge in incidences of tendon and wrist injuries, and increase in interest in other workouts and physical activities among children and adults. For instance, according to a John Hopkins Medicine article, 30 million individuals participate in organized sports, resulting in more than 3.5 million sports injuries annually in the U.S. alone, with sprains and strains.
Numerous diseases, including the most common cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disorder, are caused due to obesity. Obesity affects almost one billion individuals worldwide, including 650 million adults, 340 million teenagers, and 39 million children that are more prone to tendon injuries. For instance, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2022, about 167 million children and adults will be overweight or obese by 2025, putting their health at risk.
Moreover, surge in accidents causes soft tissue injuries, particularly road accidents lead to increase in number of tendon repair surgeries, thus fueling the growth of the tendon repair market. For instance, according to the WHO 2018 fact sheet, road accidents cause around 20.0 to 50.0 million injuries annually worldwide. According to Accident and Emergency (A&E) statistics, 24.8 million sports injuries were recorded in 2019, an increase of 2% compared with 2018.
Furthermore, increase in demand for minimally invasive procedures propels the adoption of tendon repair product. In addition, technological advancements; launch of various products; strategies among key players such as acquisition, collaboration, and agreement drive the growth of the tendon repair market. For instance, in January 2021, Smith & Nephew Company acquired the extremity orthopedic business. This acquisition helped Smith & Nephew's idea to invest in growing segments and extended product portfolio of orthopedic segment.
However, lack of acceptance for biological products and lack of appropriate knowledge regarding products among physicians and surgeon limit the market growth. Stricter regulatory standards, and high cost for tendon repair products also restrain the market growth.
Furthermore, healthcare business is predicted to witness growth, owing to rise in prevalence of tendonitis and obesity, increase in R&D investments in drug discovery & development, and rise in awareness regarding physical fitness and workout. This is anticipated to offer remunerative opportunities for key players to invest in the market during the forecast period.
