The global hydroxyapatite market size reached US$ 2.4 Billion in 2022. Looking forward, IMARC Group expects the market to reach US$ 3.4 Billion by 2028, exhibiting a growth rate (CAGR) of 5.5% during 2023-2028.
Hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) is a naturally occurring inorganic calcium phosphate mineral that is synthesized from various biological sources, including mammalian bone, fish scales, and eggshells. It is similar to hard tissue in morphology and composition and has a hexagonal structure and serum calcium to phosphorous (Ca/P) ratio identical to bone apatite. Unlike calcium phosphates, hydroxyapatite can remain thermodynamically stable under different temperatures and pH levels. Apart from this, it offers high rigidity, better enamel remineralization than saliva, faster bone healing at the bone-implant interface, and compositional closeness to bone minerals. On account of these properties, hydroxyapatite is used in coatings to coarsen metal implant surfaces, bone grafts or fillers, and orthopedic and dental care devices. At present, hydroxyapatite is mainly bifurcated into nano and micro-sized types.
Hydroxyapatite Market Trends:
- The increasing prevalence of various cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and the rising need for bone grafting, transplants, and bioactive ceramics have intensified the widespread adoption of hydroxyapatite for performing diverse surgeries, which is primarily driving the market growth. In line with this, the growing consciousness amongst consumers regarding their physical appearance and the escalating instances of dermatological issues, especially amongst the geriatric population, is supplementing the product demand. Hydroxyapatite cement is biocompatible, and it can be easily molded, unlike other alloplastic materials, including high-density polyethylene and silicon; therefore, it finds extensive applications as alloplastic materials in craniofacial surgeries and prosthetics. Additionally, the extensive utilization of nano-hydroxyapatite in drug and gene delivery, bone tissue engineering, and fillers, and as a desensitizing agent to decrease tooth sensitivity and reduce plaque levels for teeth whitening are contributing to the market growth. This is further influenced by the increasing consumer awareness regarding multiple product benefits, such as bioactivity, osteoconductive, non-toxicity, and non-inflammatory properties. Apart from this, the shifting inclination of dental product manufacturers toward hydroxyapatite as a fluoride substitute is creating a positive outlook for the market.
